Pray for rain

Yes, it’s another whinge about the weather and smoke.
Most of the valley is under a Red Flag Warning, an Excessive Heat Warning, and/or an Air Quality Alert.  The nearest major fire is the one to the north up by Paradise in Butte County. The wind is blowing straight from there.
The smoke has infiltrated the ventilation [...]

Not again!

After several smoky days, the air cleared somewhat in time for Independence Day.  We got to spend some time outside in the sun.  After the sun set, we played with fire (just sparklers and ground blooms!).
Then the winds shifted on Sunday, and smoke began to fill the valley again.  Today’s Air Quality Index is likely [...]

Breatheable

The air is finally starting to clear up.  There was a blue sky overhead almost all day on Monday, when I got my usual half-hour of walking in again at work.  I don’t feel like such a slug now.
On Sunday, there was only a faint reek of smoke and the air quality peaked at 130.  [...]

The North Wind doth blow. . .

Aside from a few big, violent winter storms, the Sacramento area has had a particularly dry couple of years. We used to see weeks of rain during the winter, spring showers, and regular summer thundershowers. That predictable precipitation seems to have been replaced by the North wind.
I’ve lived in the area for [...]

Weekend mumblings

It rained off and on all day Saturday, which was a blessing compared to the preceding week of hot, dry, and windy misery. The weather was particularly pleasant on Sunday - low clouds, a hint of a damp breeze, low 70s. Definitely not typical Memorial Day weekend temperatures!
Thanks to the warm rain, my mint plant [...]

The storm-wind’s moody madness

Another couple of photos from a storm in March, 2006. The natural lighting was all lurid amber-green.

There is a misconception that California rarely experiences severe weather; we actually do see tornados here, and there were three funnel clouds spotted in the valley on this particular day. I’m not sure if this one really [...]

Be thou the rainbow

Be thou the rainbow to the storms of life,
The evening beam that smiles the clouds away,
And tints to-morrow with prophetic ray!

Spring-like weekend

Yesterday was a beautiful spring-like day. The operative word in “spring-like” is “like” - because while it was sunny and the birds were singing, it was still very cold. Brian took Aya to the park and let her race around, then he sat outside and read for hours. I spent almost the entire day inside, [...]

Brewing storm

These photographs were taken in March of 2006, on the way home from work. The clouds were boiling and slowly circling, and there were occasional rumbles of thunder. Since I didn’t want to try to operate a camera while driving, I coerced my twin, who has a dislike of tornadoes bordering on [...]

Cold, tired and sick.

I finally went to see the doctor today, after being sick for a month. I got some gentle chiding for putting it off so long and a prescription for Biaxin to deal with bronchitis and sinusitis. My blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and weight were all good.
It was stormy today, but no where near as [...]
