Starred in my Google Reader:
First, Arborio Rice Pudding with Cinnamon-Cardamom Streusel is another recipe from Sugar Plum that I really need to find time to try out. It looks toe-curling good.
And then there’s Michael’s Simple Summer Pickles from Urban Garden Casual. My cucumbers aren’t ripe yet, though. PICKLES!
While you’re thinking about pickles and pudding, read [...]

Yes, it’s another whinge about the weather and smoke.
Most of the valley is under a Red Flag Warning, an Excessive Heat Warning, and/or an Air Quality Alert. The nearest major fire is the one to the north up by Paradise in Butte County. The wind is blowing straight from there.
The smoke has infiltrated the ventilation [...]

After several smoky days, the air cleared somewhat in time for Independence Day. We got to spend some time outside in the sun. After the sun set, we played with fire (just sparklers and ground blooms!).
Then the winds shifted on Sunday, and smoke began to fill the valley again. Today’s Air Quality Index is likely [...]

Aya came down with her first summer cold this year after a swim party at a friend’s house on Monday. Since Monday night, she’s had a sore throat and a [...]

Hawking snake oil to sick people is heartless.
The FDA agrees and recently sent out a series of “warning letters” to various companies and individuals who tout unproven claims that their products can cure cancer. They’re talking about things like bloodroot, shark cartilage, coral calcium, cesium, mushrooms, black salve, etc., products which marketers claim can [...]

I finally got a call back from my doctor.
He confirmed that I have what is essentially an immune disorder. It’s one of those things where they don’t know what causes it, other than some quirk of genetics and environmental factors combined with immune system function. Fortunately, the resulting inflammation is fairly limited and mild at [...]

I was supposed to get a call from the doctor* Thursday to let me know what the biopsy results were and what the course of treatment would be. I didn’t. So I called Friday and spoke with a receptionist at his office who was either very stupid or hated her job or had [...]

Back from alien abduction.
I had this outpatient diagnostic endoscopic procedure done early Thursday afternoon. The procedure itself wasn’t bad. The prep for it was horrible, though. I don’t mind fasting, but I do mind going without water; that wonky feeling of being dehydrated really bothers me.
And being dehydrated makes my veins disappear! [...]

Every year, it seems like Aya is sick on Mother’s Day.
I thought we might be able to sneak past the tradition this year. She had the sniffles yesterday, but I passed her symptoms off as allergies due to a windy day and time spent outside helping me garden. And then I let her stay up [...]
