To sleep in

I’ve come to accept that a big part of parenting is sleep deprivation.
While Aya has a firm bedtime (no later than 7:30 pm on weeknights), she gets up pretty much whenever she wants to — which is usually before 6:30 a.m. Which means I get up before 6:30 a.m. Even on weekends*. [...]

Aya-ism

Today, Aya was playing with her Littlest Pet Shop toys and talking about glitter boxes.
She meant litter boxes.
I took some time and explained to her the difference between glitter and litter. She laughed.

Summer doldrums

After spending about two weeks down with tonsillitis, Aya has started complaining that she’s bored with summer vacation.  She has cabin fever.  She’s tired of computer games and DVDs and TV.  Hanging out with her dad isn’t good enough; she wants to meet up with her friends. She wants to go out and do things.
She [...]

Summer afternoon

Aya was up late last night with a cough and a terribly sore throat (still!).  She was crying because she couldn’t even swallow.  Roleplay was truncated and I missed the last half of Dr. Who, but with much cuddling (and ice chips, honey, and Motrin), she finally fell asleep, so it was worth it.  [...]

Well-being whinge

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. ”
Constitution of the World Health Organization.
Aya came down with her first summer cold this year after a swim party at a friend’s house on Monday.   Since Monday night, she’s had a sore throat and a [...]

Ice Cream Social

Last night, Brian and I took Aya to an ice cream social at her kindergarten teacher’s house. It was a short drive to a very nice part of town, where most of the driveways hold a Mercedes or two and most of the houses are worth close to a million dollars. As we got [...]

Sweet tooth or green tooth?

I’ve been pretty lucky so far for growing a healthy eater. My little one has not met a vegetable she didn’t like.
Aya’s favorites are raw broccoli, fresh corn, and lightly blanched asparagus. She’s not big on sauces or dipping, although she will try ranch dressing with carrots or celery. However, getting her to [...]

Weekend mumblings

It rained off and on all day Saturday, which was a blessing compared to the preceding week of hot, dry, and windy misery. The weather was particularly pleasant on Sunday - low clouds, a hint of a damp breeze, low 70s. Definitely not typical Memorial Day weekend temperatures!
Thanks to the warm rain, my mint plant [...]

Peace.

Aya reports that her mini camping trip was fun and “the best field trip ever.” Her pillow got lost before she even got there. (How that happened, I have no idea. Didn’t it go up in the same car with her?) She doesn’t have any sunburn or mosquito bites, though. Whew!
She [...]
