Maintenance

I found a couple of WordPress themes that I really like, so don’t be surprised if you see the maintenance splash screen intermittently over the next few days.
I’d finish tweaking them tonight, only I think I’m coming down with a cold.  So I’m going to sleep early.

Summer doldrums

After spending about two weeks down with tonsillitis, Aya has started complaining that she’s bored with summer vacation.  She has cabin fever.  She’s tired of computer games and DVDs and TV.  Hanging out with her dad isn’t good enough; she wants to meet up with her friends. She wants to go out and do things.
She [...]

Daily Writing

In How To Write Every Day (and why you should), Ali at Daily Writing Tips acknowledges that it’s not easy to write every day, but offers suggestions relevant to daily writing of fiction, journal entries and blog posts.
Some day, I want to finish one (or all) of the three stories I’ve been slogging through for [...]

Not my dream career.

Being a legal secretary / legal assistant / paralegal is not, and never has been, my dream career.   But it is what I do.  It is what I know how to do.  It pays the bills.
This is an 8 to 5 job which doesn’t require me to bring work-worries home  - which is the primary [...]

Not again!

After several smoky days, the air cleared somewhat in time for Independence Day.  We got to spend some time outside in the sun.  After the sun set, we played with fire (just sparklers and ground blooms!).
Then the winds shifted on Sunday, and smoke began to fill the valley again.  Today’s Air Quality Index is likely [...]

Why don’t you look exactly alike?

If you’re identical twins, why don’t you look exactly alike?
This question is invariably posed by the ignorant with a note of suspicious challenge and more than a hint of smarm, as if you know, maybe Lillith and I are just strangers who happen to look, sound, and think quite a bit alike and are just [...]

Independence

My twin related that a Canadian friend thought July 4 was the United States’ equivalent of Canada Day.
The dates and festivities are similar.  Like Independence Day, Canada Day is a national “birthday,” but my twin was surprised to learn that it’s not a celebration of revolution or independence.  Apparently Canadians celebrate the July 1, 1867 [...]

Well-being whinge

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. ”
Constitution of the World Health Organization.
Aya came down with her first summer cold this year after a swim party at a friend’s house on Monday.   Since Monday night, she’s had a sore throat and a [...]

Breatheable

The air is finally starting to clear up.  There was a blue sky overhead almost all day on Monday, when I got my usual half-hour of walking in again at work.  I don’t feel like such a slug now.
On Sunday, there was only a faint reek of smoke and the air quality peaked at 130.  [...]

Recipes, EQ Style

I’ve been playing Everquest again.  The nostalgia factor is great, but I’ve abandoned my favored and familiar druid and shadowknight in lieu of trying out a new character class.  Based on my experiences with hunters in Lord of the Rings Online, I’m playing a ranger in EQ. It’s great. Dude! It’s so easy to bow [...]
