Some of the other moms at Aya’s school have been gushing about how great California Family Fitness is and how much fun their kids have been having there this summer. I’ve been considering a gym membership since about the time Aya was born, but I keep coming up with reasons not to: no time, too tired, too self-conscious, too expensive, I get enough exercise walking during the week, I’d end up going alone, blah, blah, blah.
I can make excuses to myself. I can’t make excuses to my daughter. So, I asked Brian to stop by on Monday afternoon to inquire about their membership prices. Of course, they didn’t have this information available online or by phone. . . he had to schedule a time to go in.
The guy Brian spoke to gave him an outrageous figure for the first month which, including “processing” and “enrollment” fees, would have amounted to about $1000 for our family, plus about $150+ monthly thereafter. We could save around $400 off the “enrollment” fee if we signed a contract today. Um. No thanks? For that much money, I’ll be damned if I rush into a decision.
The guy must work off commission. I don’t know, maybe those figures aren’t outrageous. But it’s more than I’d be willing to spend. We could quickly put together our own home gym at those rates. If we had the space, that is.
I told Brian that if he was really impressed with the facilities, if it was something he’d use daily, and if he thought it was worth it, he could sign up. The decision was up to him, but ultimately we all agreed it was not worth the cost to us.
As he was leaving, one of the school moms came out to talk to him. I guess she found someone else for him to speak with, who could sign him up under a local Mom’s Club for about a third of the original price, sans funny WTF-fees. It’s all in who you talk to, I guess.
My husband wasn’t interested in actually joining the Mom’s Club, though. Can’t imagine why.
Hopefully now Aya can have more social interaction during the rest of the summer, Brian should have some motivation to exercise, and I’ll have no excuse not to work out on weekends.
I hate excuses.

Wish you guys lived near! I’d let ya’ll borrow the wii fit to try it out!
And back on topic: motivation is my KEY weakness in keeping up with trying to be more mel shaped, less round!
Oooh, love my Wii Fit. I actually used it every day — until family arrived for a visit. Strangely enough, though, I’m missing using it while they are here.
My excuse is…I’m lazy. Sloth was my major sin of the seven deadlies. I’ve always thought that if I spent money monthly I’d be more inclined to go work out. It worked for judo when I lived elsewhere that actually had a community center that offered it. It didn’t work for the gym. Wasted money.
