Perfect Playable
Jun 3rd, 2008 by Eve
Jewell Ravenlock’s Perchance to Dream storyline over at Dragon’s Mark - Red Dragon Inn come as close to perfect as anything I have seen for a FFRP / collaborative writing Playable. What makes it great?
There is an extensive OOC post explaining how to make use of the storyline as a playable event. Jewell takes the time to detail the premise of the storyline, how to play along, what players shouldn’t do, and the expected pace. She acknowledges that the storyline may seem to progress slowly and explains that she will set the pace by posting Playables.
Each Playable posted has a note at the bottom for more details about the open storyline. There’s no guessing game about where to go for more information or who to contact with questions. There are three links provided: 1) IC information regarding the playable, 2)OOC information regarding the playable and how to play along, and 3)other threads dealing with the storyline.
It’s a truly open storyline. Jewell offers suggestions on how anyone can bring the storyline’s details and events into play. She also specifically notes that she has tried to make it as open as possible to allow everyone to play along (or not) in any way they wish.
The storyline is interesting. Thankfully, this isn’t yet another random crime report covering the mutiliation and/or gruesome death of a faceless NPC. Almost everyone has dreams and nightmares - what would happen if those dreams became reality? It’s easy to explore the possibilities.
Kudos for Jewell Ravenlock for putting together such a fantastic storyline. I am really looking forward to watching the roleplay and posts develop.

The “How can I play along” and “what can’t I do” sections are things that should be included in every open forum storyline; that seems like a great thing to add to keep wank and OOC drama down in a story. Rawr to Jewell.
I think I’m going to include a section like that for any open forum roleplay I do in the future.
