Open House
Mar 27th, 2008 by Eve
We went to Aya’s open house at school last night. I don’t remember any parent nights when I was in kindergarten, so I didn’t have much to compare it to. I only remember open house from 3rd grade and up, and those were tiresome affairs with bitter teachers.
I didn’t take photographs, so words will have to suffice.
The classroom was colorfully decorated like the ocean, reflecting the recent direction of their education. Crooked, childish writing explained the life cycle of coral, illustrated spiny sea urchins, sea horses, and sea stars. The posters accompanying their oral reports were propped up in front of the windows. The teacher had made a DVD featuring the class, with snapshots and movies taken since school started.
They had windsocks made from rainbow-colored construction paper and crepe streamers dangling from one wall and construction paper mosaic stars on another wall. I was pleased to be able to pick out Aya’s art, even having never seen it before. She has a good eye for color balance and patterns.
As we walked through the halls, she was cheerfully greeted by every single classmate she passed with a, “Hi, Aya!” She’d call out their names, grinning and waving. “Hi Peter!” “Drew!” “Mikaela’s mom!”
Milling, excited kids swarmed and proudly tugged their dazed parents from one table to the next to show off their work and their journals. Boy, it was loud. And hectic. But I was amazed by how friendly and happy all the kids were. They seemed comfortable being at school.
That’s how it should be.

Aya really loves school, which is good. Very good. As far as I can tell all (or at least most) of her classmates do too. I am glad you got to stay long enough to see her work.
Love you.
