Necrobump

For a couple of months, I’d completely forgotten about Wolvinator’s strange ideas about how freeform roleplay at Dragon’s Mark should be conducted. This is so old news, but after Googling “Wolvinator”, Dolus was kind enough to necrobump Election day with this comment:

Dolus Says:
20 March 2008 at 5:40 pm.

Funny, I thought Wolvinator said this about Governors (and in the very thread you link to, no less):

“You have to realize that yes, [Governors] absolutely have no power. You’re not an Admin, a moderator, and nothing of the sort. Everything that you “attempt” to do, really has to be accepted by your fellow gamers. You can’t just try to waltz in, and suddenly have a holier then thou attitude. That’s the quickest way to get ignored by other players, and possibly actually make the IC title void. ”

Good job making someone look bad by quoting them out of context. I assume you are thoroughly chagrined at having made this blatant error and you’ll be making a new post apologizing to Wolvinator for insulting him.

Thanks for reminding me why I left Rhy’Din. You’re amazing.

Wow… looks like someone was a little sore that his buddy didn’t win the election.

Dolus, I’m glad you’ve acknowledged that I’m amazing, and I’m absolutely thrilled to have been able to remind you why you jumped ship. I had no idea you’d flounced off into the sunset. :( Even though you (or your character?) has left Rhydin, I wanted to say that I think your work at Dragon’s Mark was also amazing. Playing a mutant in Star Fleet. . . wow, what a combination! How absolutely fangirl!

Do note that readers are perfectly capable of reviewing all five pages of the very thread I linked to and deciding for themselves whether or not my excerpt was quoted out of context. Of course, I don’t think it was, particularly not when considered in the context of the entire, evolving discussion on that thread.

I think you managed to pick one bit out of this blog entry and take it out of context from the rest, but, you know, I’ve realized that my written communication skills are often lacking and even when they aren’t, sometimes reading comprehension skills aren’t for everyone.

My sad writing aside, I would like to sincerely thank Dolus so much for that pissy little necrobump. I’d forgotten how tickled I was by Wolvinator’s gems about How It Should Be Done, and I got another good 15 minutes of entertainment from something I’d completely forgotten about. Like this one:

It seems like ignoring it, or not acknowledging it, seems to be the route that a few people have suggested. I suppose that’s fine and dandy, it is Free Form, but I don’t necessarily agree with it in this sort of instance. Why play in a playground if you’re just going to ignore the slides, the swings, the jungle gym, the sand and the grass? If that’s the case, and I don’t mean to sound rude, but then go build your own playground and play in it. I.E. write a story, with your own set of rules, and your own elements that you want to have in it.

See What Power… for context, but in other words: If you want to ignore the governor, go find another place to RP.

I have yet to see the position of “Governor” or any information about the government added to any of the “canon” playground for Rhydin. Until it becomes canon, those who choose not to include government-related storylines in their roleplaying aren’t ignoring any crucial bits of the playground. Further, the last time I checked, the Red Dragon Inn and Rhydin at Dragon’s Mark still encouraged players to freely express their own character vision, build their own creative elements, and write their own stories with whatever internal rules/guidelines they deem appropriate — so it shouldn’t be necessary to go build a new playground.

Wolvinator made himself look bad without any help from me, even aside from the aforementioned thread. There are plenty of other discussions where his posts indicate a heavy tendency to steamroll. A prime example is his sanctimonious, holier-than-thou judgment on people who unexpectedly bring a convenient skill or power into play, “especially if it’s never been mentioned before anywhere in your character’s development. That goes for boards, profiles and whatever else form of knowledge you can possibly think of. “:

To be honest, it’s just bad form, and complete B.S. at that point. It’s not feasible, that’s called “making stuff up”. I know we’re all sitting her playing a game, making things up as we go along. But what I cited there was what a bad player would do in that situation. That… is what makes you a bad player. You can’t just waltzed into RDI and be a Super Sayajin Mutant Wizard Star Trek Commanding Dark Lord of the Jedi Marine Sniper Ex Convict Military Experiment Street Fighting Bazooka Toting Half Dwarf, Half Elf, Half Lizard, ¾ Vulcan, 2/3 Human Race car driver.

It just doesn’t work.

Gee whiz, I thought free form roleplaying was all about making stuff up. I now know that all those players who’ve made stuff up as they went along, developed their character’s skills on the fly, or haven’t posted detailed character sheets with every possible power and piece of equipment their character might ever use – they were all doing it wrong. It just doesn’t work. Bad players! Bad form!

I do not believe that free form roleplaying has rules about what you could play, or that other players could decide which character concepts were feasible. Not at Dragon’s Mark’s Rhydin, anyway.

Obviously, I have some pretty fundamental disagreements with Wolvinator’s opinions about cooperative, free form roleplaying, but that’s okay; I don’t have to roleplay with him. I’m moving on with things.

Are you?

  • But, but, reading entire posts are hard! Let’s just skim instead and zero in on the one piece of information we want to respond to and pick it apart until it’s a dead horse!

    YAY!

  • So the end result is someone left Rhydin because he/she/it didn’t like his/her/its pal losing a roleplay election; didn’t like how said friend looked for posting his opinions about roleplay, roleplay elections, and how people who didn’t play like him were “bad players” (cos calling roleplayers “bad players” ALWAYS wins friends and popularity in a roleplay community, doncha know); or because he/she/it didn’t like how free form roleplay works?

If that necrobump was a ploy for sympathy, I don’t think it worked too well, though he/she/it did earn a bit of pity. I thought -I- was bitter about the way things are handled OOC/administratively at DM, but I’ve clearly found someone even more bitter than me… simply about the roleplay itself, apparently.

I pass by here sometimes in my exploits, and I came across this which bothered me.

And playing a Demonic Elf is so much more original. I applaud you.

Random Passer By, aka JBravo2000@hotmail.com at 216.2.193.1, while I’m sorry you were bothered by my blog, I’m thrilled that you think my character concept is original.

It really isn’t original, not at all. After this long, nothing is original.

By the way — I’m not at all impressed with anonymity; sarcasm and whinge don’t have much impact when you have to cower in the shadows to mutter your vitriol.

  • Once again, Random Passer By, a most excellent case of picking apart what they wanted from the post without read the rest of it.

You should attempt to start a witch-burning when the wind is in your favor first, or else you’ll just be the only one catching fire.

Just wanted to say thanks to the fellows in New York who keep Googling “Wolvinator” and hitting this blog. You’re a riot!
