Aya seems to be doing a lot better.
She was coughing constantly Thursday into Friday. It’s croup, which she hasn’t had for more than a year. None of us really slept Thursday night. Her doctor gave us the okay to give her some promethazine/codeine cough syrup so she could get some rest, and that helped. The stuff is remarkably bitter. Before she tried it, she told me, “Mom, this smells terrible.” After she took the dose, she gave a yuck-wiggle and exclaimed, “Blech! It tastes terrible! Yuck. Yuck!” She sounded so serious, and almost outraged at the flavor. It was endearing.
She didn’t get much of a fever until I started roleplaying Friday night. (Sorry for bailing without warning!) I heard her whimpering and muttering and went in to check on her. Her temperature had shot up to 104.7. We gave her Tylenol. . . which, 45 minutes later, hadn’t brought it down at all. So we gave her some Motrin. By that time, I was so fuzzy-headed with exhaustion I couldn’t figure out what else to do, so I stumbled into Lil’s room, told her Aya’s fever was spiking, and asked her if I should give Aya a sponge bath to cool her off and if so, how to do it. My twin looked kind of alarmed at my incoherence, but she dutifully looked it up and explained it to me a couple of times until I understood what she was telling me. By the time I got a lukewarm washcloth, Aya’s fever had started to come down, though.
One would think that by now, I would be used to her high fevers. I’m not. They still scare me, every time.
I got some sleep after going to the grocery store. That was Saturday, I think. Lil drove me. I was apparently in no condition to operate a vehicle. Aya was in a fairly good mood, watched every Star Wars movie except Episode II, ate popsicles, played Star Wars Legos II, and improved throughout the day. She was quite talkative and engaging, and only got glum when she started worrying about the possibility of not being able to go to school on Monday.
She only woke up twice last night. I promised her she’d feel better in the morning. I hope she does.

Hopefully she will be well enough in the morning to go to school. I know she really wants to…
