I tried home-ec101’s Ground Beef and Cabbage skillet recipe last weekend. Very tasty, quick, and easy. The name is kind of deceptive; it’s more tomato and rice and ground beef than cabbage. Kind of like a cabbage roll without all the work.
home-ec’s recipe lists optional additions like diced bell pepper, frozen corn, and kidney beans. I didn’t add any of that. Next time I make it, I’ll probably try adding some garlic (2 cloves), more onion (1 full cup) and maybe less thyme (maybe 1/4 tsp).
The ingredients I used:
- Ground Beef (1 lb, sirloin)
- Onion (1/2 cup diced)
- Cabbage (1/2 head, chopped)
- Uncooked rice (1 cup)
- Tomato sauce (15 oz can)
- Tomato paste (6 oz can)
- Water (1 1/2 cups)
- Merlot (1/2 cup)
- Salt (1/2 tsp)
- Thyme (1/2 tsp)

My grandmother used to make the finest cabbage rolls I have ever (remembered) eating. Her recipe was terribly simple, and it was mostly these ingredients. Just the meat and rice rolled in the cabbage leaves and set in the tomato sauce to cook.
I’m so glad you shared this, because I had forgotten about those cabbage rolls until I read this. We’re making this for supper today
I can’t wait!
